Where to Buy Maheshwari Sarees in Maheshwar: A Weaver Family's Guide
7 November 2026
Maheshwar sits on the banks of the Narmada in Madhya Pradesh, and its sarees are as famous as its fort and ghats. If you are coming here to buy a Maheshwari saree, this guide from our weaving family will help you buy the real thing — and enjoy doing it.
Why buy a Maheshwari saree in Maheshwar?
Maheshwari weaving grew under Rani Ahilyabai Holkar, who ruled from Maheshwar in the 18th century and is remembered for bringing master weavers to settle in the town. The craft is now protected as a Geographical Indication (GI) of Madhya Pradesh, and most of the looms are still here, in homes and small workshops across the old town.
Buying here means you can see the looms at work, feel the fabric in daylight and talk to the people who weave it.
How to recognise a real Maheshwari saree
- The fabric: a classic Maheshwari is woven with a silk warp and a fine cotton weft. It feels light and soft, with a gentle sheen — never stiff or plasticky.
- The border: many Maheshwaris have a reversible border, so the saree can be draped from either side. Turn the border over and look at the reverse.
- The motifs: traditional borders and pallus use simple geometric designs such as chatai (mat), eent (brick), heera (diamond) and leheriya (wave), along with checks and stripes.
- The hand of the weaver: handloom fabric has tiny, even irregularities. A perfectly uniform surface with fuzzy, printed-looking motifs is a sign of a powerloom copy.
- Ask questions: a genuine seller can tell you the fabric, who wove it and roughly how long it took.
Where to shop in Maheshwar
- Weaving families and their shops: the old town around the fort and ghats has many weaving households and small showrooms. Visiting one lets you see the looms and buy straight from the makers.
- Weavers' cooperatives and societies: they sell pieces woven by member weavers at fixed prices.
- Zari Buta (Gujrati Handloom), Bazar Chowk, Maheshwar: that is us. We weave Maheshwari sarees, suits, dupattas and dress materials on our own looms and sell them directly. Message us on WhatsApp for store timings, or to see the looms when you visit.
Tips for buying on your visit
- Go in daylight. Silk-cotton changes colour under shop lights; step to the door before you decide.
- Unfold the pallu fully and check the border along the whole length.
- Ask for the blouse piece and whether a fall and pico can be done.
- Keep the bill. It records what you bought and from whom.
